SPEED SAFETY CAMERAS ON INTERSTATE 81 IN ROANOKE AND BOTETOURT COUNTIES

30-DAY WARNING PERIOD BEGINNING MONDAY, May 11, 2026

BOTETOURT AND ROANOKE COUNTIES, Va. – Virginia State Police is installing speed safety cameras on Interstate 81 northbound and southbound in the work zone in the counties of Roanoke and Botetourt, between the 143 and 150-mile markers. The cameras are authorized under Virginia law (Virginia Code § 46.2-882.1) and will be active on May 11, 2026.

Monday will start the enforcement in this work zone and will begin with a 30-day “warning” period. Therefore, violators will receive a warning to educate them about the program and enlist their support with improving work zone safety instead of a citation. Each offense is validated by the Virginia State Police before a citation or warning is issued.

Once this warning period ends, if a vehicle is captured over the posted speed limit in the work zone, the registered owner of the vehicle may be issued a civil citation by mail. The associated fine is $100 but there is no impact on a person’s driving record or vehicle insurance. All fees collected by law revert to the State Literary Fund, which benefits public school construction, technology funding and teacher retirement.

Drivers can challenge a citation they believe was given in error. Information on how to contest the citation, as well as other facts about the program, can be found at Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program – Virginia State Police.

This program is focused on reducing crashes and injuries in Virginia’s major highway work zones through increased awareness and voluntary compliance with the speed limit.

Franklin County wildlife officers arrested a 29-year-old man late Monday night after a string of odd incidents at several hunting properties along County Road 12.

According to officials, the man — now nicknamed “The Tree Stand Bandit” by locals — had been sneaking onto private land for weeks, but not to hunt deer. Instead, officers say he was quietly climbing into unattended tree stands and leaving behind his own snacks, gear, and strange handwritten notes.

“It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen,” said one landowner. “He left beef jerky, a bottle of apple scent, and a note that just said, ‘Thanks for the view.’”

After several hunters reported spotting him at dusk, officers set up a trail camera sting. They eventually found him perched 18 feet up in a tree stand in full camo and sipping hot chocolate from a thermos, claiming he was “just scouting for vibes.”

Wardens say the man didn’t have a weapon on him, only a cheap pair of binoculars, a folding chair cushion, and a f***y pack with trail mix.

The administration is arguing that if you use ma*****na in your home you cannot have fi****ms in your home, essentially you give up your 2A rights if you use ma*****na. This will allow for a drug testing requirement at the point of sale. I had a similar case heard in the court of appeals regarding simple possession without use. Call our office for a consult on your rights!

The Supreme Court will consider whether people who regularly smoke ma*****na can legally own guns, the latest firearm case to come before the court since its 2022 decision expanding gun rights.
