The Ford Pinto. This car had a design flaw that caused the fuel tank to rupture during a rear-end collision. This caused 13-year old Richard Grimshaw severe burns and also, the death of the driver. Internal memos proved that Ford knew about the defect.

In 1978, the jury verdict was for $127.8 million dollars in this landmark personal injury case of Grimshaw vs Ford.
