Good news! President Biden has officially increased the annual U.S. Refugee Cap from 15,000 to 62,500. This will allow significantly more refugees to be welcomed into the U.S. each year.

Increasing the refugee cap is one of many necessary steps towards creating a just, compassionate, and functional immigration system in the United States. We celebrate this change and are thankful for all those who worked to hold the president accountable to his campaign promise to the refugee community.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a program which allows eligible individuals to apply to remain in the United States and receive a work permit for a set period of time.

Countries may be designated for various reasons, including ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or extraordinary conditions, such as the humanitarian crisis occurring in Venezuela.

USCIS estimates that approximately 323,000 individuals will be eligible to apply for TPS under the new designation for Venezuela.

Tax Day is coming up soon!

Do you have what you need to accurately complete your tax return?

Do you know how to spot and avoid common tax scams?

Do you need help finding an accredited free or low-cost tax preparer in King County?

It is extremely important that both status-holding and undocumented individuals file a tax return if they worked in the U.S. during 2020 and meet certain criteria.

Failure to file one’s taxes correctly can cause major issues for future immigration applications. Avoid those headaches by making sure that you file your taxes accurately and on-time!

This week our blog has detailed information about where to find a trusted tax-preparer near you and how to spot common tax scams:

www.sysimmigrationlaw.com/en/news-resources/2021/3/9/tax-day-is-april-15th

The annual deadline for submitting tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is April 15th, 2021. Most people who worked in the U.S. during the 2020 calendar year should submit a tax return on or before April 15th. You do not need to have legal status in the United States, or a valid soci

President Biden has proposed the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. If passed by Congress, this piece of legislation would bring several important changes to the law, including:

- creating a pathway to citizenship for millions of individuals
- eliminating the 3 and 10-year penalties barring entry to the U.S.
- raising the per-country caps for family and employment immigration
- changing “alien” to “non-citizen” in official documents
- increasing diversity visas
- improving the immigration courts, and
- addressing several other important issues

Please click below for a more detailed look at this proposed legislation and join us in applauding this first step on the path to meaningful immigration reform:

Tips and Advice: Hold onto your documents!

Do you know where your family's birth certificates, tax returns, or old bank statements and monthly bills are?

Many immigration applications require applicants to submit supporting documentation as proof of their identity, family relationships, or presence in the United States for a given period of time.

If you have an ongoing immigration case, we strongly suggest that you create a home filing system or dedicated document box where you keep identity documents, school records, tax returns, monthly bills or subscriptions, or other documents that may be useful in demonstrating your ties to the U.S. and the amount of time that you have lived here.

Taking a few minutes now to gather your documents in a safe place can help to make your application process easier and less stressful.

President Biden continues his commitment to undoing Trump’s harmful immigration policies. This week, he issued additional executive orders on immigration: creating a task force on family separation, calling for a review of the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum-seekers, and looking into current barriers to obtaining a green card or U.S. citizenship.

President Biden has issued executive orders to address the more visible anti-immigrant policies of the Trump Administration, but as this important article reveals, it is the lesser-known changes to fees, forms, procedures, and policies that have also had a devastating impact on many immigrants and their families.

We applaud the important work of Lucas Guttentag, the Immigration Policy Tracking Project, and the Global Migration Project in documenting the small immigration changes enacted during the Trump presidency and bringing the harm they cause to the public eye.

Understanding the consequences of our current policies is the first step towards changing our immigration system so that no other families have to suffer this pain:

Trump transformed immigration through hundreds of quiet measures. Before they can be reversed, they have to be uncovered.

We celebrate these policy shifts and remain committed to holding our leaders accountable for their campaign promises.

We can and will do better for America’s immigrant families, and this is just the start!
