☀️ Summer officially starts this weekend, and many families are gearing up for vacations, road trips, and time spent making memories.

In our recent InComplete Newsletter, Jackie Cox shares an important reminder: while we spend time planning our travels, we often overlook planning for the unexpected.

Before you pack your bags, consider whether your estate plan is up to date. Reviewing your will, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and beneficiary designations can provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones—wherever your summer adventures take you.

A Durable Power of Attorney is one of the most important estate planning documents you can have. It allows someone you trust to step in and manage your financial and legal affairs if you're ever unable to do so yourself.

With a Durable Power of Attorney, your chosen agent may be able to:
✔️ Pay bills
✔️ Access and manage bank accounts
✔️ Handle real estate transactions
✔️ Make important legal and financial decisions on your behalf

Without this document in place, your loved ones may be forced to go through a costly and time-consuming court process just to help manage your affairs.

The best time to put these protections in place is before you need them.

Not sure if your Durable Power of Attorney is up to date? Let's review your estate plan and make sure you're protected.

💜 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us that protecting older adults is a responsibility shared by families, communities, and professionals alike.

Elder abuse can take many forms—including financial exploitation, neglect, emotional abuse, and physical harm. Unfortunately, it often goes unnoticed or unreported, leaving vulnerable seniors at risk.

Understanding the warning signs is the first step toward prevention. Sudden financial changes, unexplained injuries, social isolation, or changes in behavior may signal that an older adult needs support and protection.

Today, we recognize the importance of preserving the dignity, independence, and rights of older adults. Every senior deserves to age with safety, respect, and the confidence that their voice matters.

At Complete Law KC, we believe awareness is a powerful tool for protecting our aging population and ensuring they receive the care and advocacy they deserve.

Do You Really Need a Will? 🤔

The short answer: Yes.

A Will is about much more than deciding who receives your assets. It helps ensure your wishes are honored, protects the people you care about, and can make a difficult time much easier for your loved ones.

No matter your age, family situation, or net worth, having a Will is one of the most important steps you can take to prepare for the future.

06/04/2026

Many parents may feel that naming their minor child as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy is the best way to protect them. Unfortunately, it can create unexpected legal complications.

Here's why:
➡️ Minor children generally cannot directly manage life insurance proceeds.
➡️ A court may need to appoint someone to manage the funds on their behalf.
➡️ The person chosen may not be the person you would have selected.
➡️ When your child reaches the age required by law, they may gain full control of the remaining funds—whether they're financially prepared or not.

✅ A better solution may be naming a Trust as the beneficiary.

With a properly drafted trust, you can decide:
✔️ Who manages the money
✔️ How the funds are used
✔️ When distributions are made
✔️ How your child's inheritance is protected

Your estate plan should do more than distribute assets—it should protect the people you love most.

Have questions about protecting your children's inheritance? Reach out to us to schedule a consultation and create a plan tailored to your family's needs.
