An IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that helps prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

You don’t have to be a previous victim of tax-related identity theft to get one. Eligible taxpayers can voluntarily enroll in the IRS IP PIN program for an added layer of protection.

🔐 Keep your IP PIN private and only provide it to your trusted tax professional when needed for filing.
Visit IRS.gov/IPPIN to learn more or request yours.

The deadline is known as the Assessment Statute Expiration Date, but there are exceptions to the rule.

If you omit more than 25% of your gross income, that deadline extends to 6 years.
For those who don't file or file a fraudulent return, there is no time limit.

You and the IRS can also agree in writing to extend the deadline.
