A Word to the Wise
The internet is a remarkable tool. So is artificial intelligence. Both can teach you things that once took a trip to the law library and hours of digging, and I encourage every client to learn, to ask questions, and to understand the matter they are facing. An informed client is a better client.
But there is a hard line between educating yourself and representing yourself — and lately I am watching good people cross it without realizing the danger.
Not long ago, a client decided to use AI to solve a legal problem on her own. She typed in her situation, took what the program gave back, and sent it straight to the prosecutor. She believed she had the answer. She did not. What the AI produced was not what her case called for, and the moment it landed on the prosecutor's desk, it did real harm. Rather than help her, it may have left her in worse trouble than when she started.
I share this — carefully, and without any detail that could identify her — because the lesson is worth far more than the story.
AI does not know your case. It does not know the facts the State actually has, how the law applies in our courts, or how a single sentence can be read as an admission. It cannot weigh what to say, what to hold back, and what should never be put in writing at all. Those judgments come from experience, and experience is the one thing a search bar cannot give you.
So please — educate yourself. Read, ask questions, and bring those questions to me. But before you sign, send, or file anything in a legal matter, let an attorney look at it first. A few minutes of professional advice can save you from a mistake you cannot take back — including, in the worst case, unknowingly admitting to or even committing a crime.
The tools are good. Use them wisely. And when it truly counts, let someone with decades in the courtroom stand between you and a costly error.
