SAVE was created to help government agencies verify eligibility for certain benefits, but the Trump administration expanded it into a tool for mass voter citizenship checks. Since 2025, at least 25 states have used SAVE to scan voter rolls, raising serious concerns that eligible voters, especially naturalized citizens, could be wrongly flagged or removed.

In blocking the revamped system, the court warned that the federal government had “knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of American citizens in a manner that threatens the sacred right to vote.”

This ruling is a major step toward protecting voters from unlawful purges, but the case continues.

“Salah Sarsour is going home. After more than 80 days held away from his family, a federal judge ordered his release and affirmed what should never have been in question: speaking up for Palestinian rights is protected by the First Amendment,” said Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian rights advocate who was also detained by ICE after speaking out for Palestinian human rights.

Sarsour, a Milwaukee mosque leader and lawful permanent resident, was held in ICE custody in Clay County, Indiana. We applaud the ACLU of Illinois for helping fight for his release and will continue following the case as it moves forward. For now, we celebrate that Salah is home with his family.
