Six Woodard Emhardt Attorneys Named to IAM Patent 1000's 2026 Edition
Annual ranking recognizes top patent professionals and firms in key jurisdictions worldwide

Woodard, Emhardt, Henry, Reeves & Wagner is pleased to announce that six of its attorneys have been named to the 2026 edition of IAM Patent 1000, one of the most prestigious and widely recognized rankings of patent professionals in the world. The IAM Patent 1000 is commonly regarded as a definitive resource for those seeking to identify world-class, private practice patent counsel and leading expert witnesses.

The Woodard Emhardt attorneys named to the 2026 IAM Patent 1000 are:
• Spiro Bereveskos
• Kenneth A. Gandy
• Charles P. Schmal
• William A. McKenna
• Michael M. Morris
• Blake R. Hartz

To inform its 2026 rankings, IAM undertook exhaustive qualitative research to identify outstanding firms and individuals across multiple jurisdictions based on their depth of experience, market presence, and sophistication of work.

In recognizing the firm, IAM noted that Woodard Emhardt has been exclusively dedicated to patent law since 1879, making it one of the region's most established names in intellectual property. IAM further noted that the firm pairs more than a century of focused experience with a deeply technical bench, enabling it to navigate the full patent lifecycle across technologies ranging from precision mechanical systems to cutting-edge biotechnology and software.

"We are incredibly proud of the attorneys recognized in this year's IAM Patent 1000," said Bill McKenna, Managing Partner at Woodard Emhardt. "This recognition is a reflection of their dedication, technical expertise, and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results for our clients. It is also a testament to the strength and depth of our firm's intellectual property practice as a whole."

Bringing the Indianapolis 500 to Life for Everyone

At Woodard Emhardt, we are proud to represent clients who are not just building businesses — they are changing lives.

We are thrilled to spotlight our client, Tactile Engineering Inc., whose innovative technology is transforming the way people who are blind or visually impaired experience one of the world's most iconic sporting events: the Indianapolis 500.

Through creative engineering and a deep commitment to accessibility, Tactile Engineering is making it possible for fans who cannot see the race to feel it — opening doors to an experience that was previously out of reach for millions of people.

This is exactly the kind of work that reminds us why protecting intellectual property matters. Behind every breakthrough technology is a team of dedicated inventors and entrepreneurs whose ideas deserve to be safeguarded so they can continue doing what they do best — innovating for the greater good.

We are honored to support Tactile Engineering Inc. on their IP journey and look forward to watching their impact grow far beyond the starting line.

The sounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the month of May are unmistakable. But a Purdue University-connected startup is making it possible for people who are blind or visually impaired to experience the Indianapolis 500 in ways not previously possible.

Big changes are coming for Indiana high school athletes.

Starting in the 2026-27 school year, the IHSAA will allow student-athletes to earn money from certain Personal Branding Activities. This could include social media endorsements, personal appearances, and coaching or instructional services, as long as the activity is not connected to the student’s school or team.

However, there are important restrictions. Athletes cannot use school uniforms, logos, or branding, participate in school-affiliated promotional events, accept deals tied to recruiting, or work with certain prohibited industries.

For student-athletes, parents, schools, coaches, and businesses, it will be important to understand the rules before entering into any agreement.

Josh Astin, Partner at Woodard, Emhardt, Henry, Reeves, & Wagner LLP, explains what Indiana families and businesses need to know about the IHSAA’s new rule.

Read the full article here:

Authored by: Joshua P. Astin For years, Indiana stood as one of a shrinking number of states that entirely prohibited high school athletes from profiting off their name, image, or likeness. That changes next school year. On May 4, 2026,…

Intellectual property is everywhere — you just might not be seeing it.

That supplier agreement? It might be giving away your proprietary data. That creative consultant your marketing team hired? Who owns the work? Your dev team's latest breakthrough? Built on open-source code and generative AI you don't fully control.

Formal IP audits help — but they're snapshots that go stale fast.

A better approach: develop the habit of viewing your business through IP goggles. Like night vision, they reveal what's always been there but goes unnoticed — risks, opportunities, and blind spots hiding in everyday operations.

The best part? You can take them off. IP doesn't have to drive every decision. But once you've spotted the issue, you can weigh it alongside business realities, costs, and strategy to make smarter choices.

Start seeing IP everywhere. Then decide where it matters most. https://www.theindianalawyer.com/articles/blake-r-hartz-put-on-your-ip-goggles-for-sharper-view-of-potential-issues?utm_source=delivra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=This%20Week%20in%20IBJ%20%2B%20The%20Indiana%20Lawyer&utm_id=49312372

Like night vision, 3D cinema glasses or a fish finder, your new IP goggles will let you experience the world from a new perspective.
