New Law Expands Benefits for Firefighters Diagnosed with Cancer

Fire fighters put their lives on the line every day—and now, a new federal law helps protect them and their families when cancer strikes.

The Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act, passed in December 2025, expands the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) Program to provide financial benefits to fire fighters who become permanently disabled due to certain service-related cancers. It also increases death benefits available to families who have lost a loved one to these illnesses.

For eligible claims in 2026, the federal benefit is $461,656, with amounts varying depending on the year.

The law makes it easier to qualify by recognizing that many cancers can be caused by on-the-job exposure. Covered cancers include lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, skin cancer, mesothelioma, and several others.

❗Importantly, the law applies retroactively to January 1, 2020, and families and officers may still have time to file claims—but the deadline to file retroactive claims is December 2028.

At the Darby Law Group, LLC, we are proud to stand with the fire fighters who protect our communities and the families who support them. If you or a loved one may qualify for benefits under this law, we are here to help you understand your rights and guide you through the process.
