Montana Trial Lawyers The Montana Trial Lawyers (MTLA) is a member organization for Montana attorneys who represent the injured and those whose rights are jeopardized.

MTLA sponsors Montana's premier continuing legal education (CLE) seminars. MTLA actively informs, educates and lobbies elected officials to preserve the civil jury trial system and on other issues of concern to its members and their clients. MTLA provides support and services to enable its members to excel in their profession and in their service to their clients. MTLA Statement of Purpose

To up

hold and defend the constitutions of Montana and the United States;
To advance the science of jurisprudence;
To train in advocacy;
To promote the administration of justice for the public good;
To uphold the honor and dignity of the profession of the law;
To advance the cause of those who are damaged in person or property and who must seek redress;
To encourage cooperation among the members of the bar; and
To uphold and improve the adversary system and trial by jury.

Vice President Anthony Jackson is a fifth generation Montanan from . He graduated with honors from with a degree in political science. After graduating from law school in 2012, Anthony clerked for the Honorable Justice Brian Morris of the Montana Supreme Court. After finishing his clerkship, Anthony joined a Bozeman personal injury firm in 2013, where he later became a partner. In 2018, Anthony was awarded the Montana Trial Lawyers Outstanding New Lawyer Award for his work and dedication to clients. In 2021, Anthony founded AFJ Law Firm where he focuses on helping people who have been unjustly harmed by others’ negligence or bad acts. Anthony prides himself in protecting and helping make Montana a safer and better place. In his free time, Anthony enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and most anything else , especially exploring Montana on a motorcycle, in a raft, or with a backpack.

Justin Starin graduated from the University of Montana in 1994 with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. He graduated from the School of Law in 1999. Justin clerked at the Montana Supreme Court and at the First Judicial District Court in , Montana. Since then, Justin has engaged in private practice in both Helena and , Montana. He currently is a partner in the firm of McKenna & Starin, emphasizing personal injury, workers’ compensation and insurance . Starin serves as co-chair of MTLA’s Public Outreach Committee.

President Hillary P. Carls practices in Bozeman at the law firm of Carls Law, focusing on personal injury, civil rights, insurance disputes, and class actions. Hillary is passionate about seeking justice for plaintiffs in all of Montana’s courts. Prior to returning to in 2006, Hillary was law clerk to Chief Judge Robert Coats of the Alaska Court of Appeals. In 2005, she earned her J.D. and Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. She earned her B.A. in Business from Montana State University. While at Montana State University, Hillary was a scholarship athlete on the Bobcat’s Women’s Golf Team. Hillary is a co-founder and co-chair of MTLA’s Women’s Section, and also represents as a State Delegate to the American Association of Justice. Beyond the law, Hillary serves on the board of directors for Bridger Bowl.
