Today is Tax Day! This means tomorrow, April 16, 2025, is National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD)! While tax season can be daunting, starting conversations about your health care wishes doesn't have to be.

So, what can you do to prepare for NHDD?

Today, I challenge you to take the time to reflect on what matters most to you when it comes to your health care. If you were unable to make decisions for yourself, for whatever reason, think about the following:
✅ Who would you want to make health care decisions for you? If you're married, it's safe to assume you would pick your spouse. But what if they're unable to make decisions too? Who would be your backup?
✅ What types of life-sustaining care do you want? Would you want life support? Or would you rather be allowed to pass?
✅ If you're pregnant, would that change your decision for life-sustaining care?
✅ Would you want to be an organ donor for transplant purposes? What about for research purposes?

These are choices that you can make for yourself now so you can maintain a sense of control over what happens to you when you're vulnerable.

And having a plan in place for your health care proxy to follow isn't just about maintaining control. It's also a way to show your love for your family and friends. It tells them that you understand the difficult time they may be going through and that you're going to make it easier for them by making these decisions for them so they don't have to. They only have to follow your plan and carry out your wishes.
