Our client was the child of a decedent who owned real property in Colorado and another state. Another person claimed to be the spouse of the decedent and co-owned the out-of-state property as well as some other assets. After briefing the issue of common law marriage, the court agreed with us that there was no common law marriage, appointed our client as the personal representative (and sole beneficiary), and awarded our client attorney's fees.

Matter of PW
Our client was the primary beneficiary of an estate that had been open for a long time without distribution. We investigated estate activity and learned the Personal Representative had been receiving funds from the estate without authority. We successfully petitioned for that person to be removed as Personal Representative, for our client to be appointed as successor Personal Representative, and for treble damages for the funds the initial Personal Representative improperly received from the estate.

Sam earned her J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She holds certificates in Constitutional Rights and Remedies and Legal Research, and her prior work with the Alternate Defense Counsel strengthened her advocacy skills and client-focused approach.

Ameera also earned her J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where she was recognized as a Sturm Scholar and served on the board of the First Generation Law Student Alliance. Our client faced a permanent civil protection order due to a petition which the court later found to include allegations that were not credible. After a contested hearing involving an inordinate amount of exhibits from the opposing party, and careful review and analysis, we were successful in having the temporary protection order vacated and the permanent protection order denied. Our client was able to return home.

Estate of CM
In a long, complex, and contentious probate case, our client was the appointed personal representative of the estate of an estranged sibling. Our client had little direct personal knowledge about the decedent, necessitating thorough investigatory work at each stage of the case. Through that work, our firm, together with our client, uncovered and confronted issues of co-ownership, civil claims, common-law marriage, deed issues, and similar complexities. With collaborative efforts, our client ended up reaching a settlement that was fair to all parties in all related civil and probate matters.
