I find it ironic that each and every one of us are affected by legal systems, yet these very systems make it extremely difficult for the average person to navigate and understand the law. As a result, many people remain uninformed about their legal rights and often find themselves in a position where they are unable to afford the representation they deserve and desperately need. If I had it my way
, legal representation would be free because I believe we cannot have freedom in our country unless we all understand the laws that govern us. In a recent report, the Colorado Access to Justice Commission found more than half of all litigants in civil cases had no representation. Systemically, minorities and persons of color are the groups of people who suffer the most from expensive or over-priced legal services. As a previous prosecutor and private attorney working at big name firms, I know how not having the ability to access legal representation can significantly impact one's life and how quality legal representation can make all the difference. I cannot afford to provide legal services for free; however, I can make my services affordable and fair. As a Latina and first-generation attorney from Greeley Colorado, my mission at the Law Firm of E. Shaw-Gonzales is to provide quality legal services at an obtainable price. I believe legal services should be a right not a luxury. After practicing law for various entities and people, I quickly came to the realization that this would not be a reality unless I went out on my own. Upon establishing my firm, I selected my hourly rate far below the rates I had at my previous employers with the hope that this opens the door and provides opportunity for legal representation. I may be a small firm, but I hope to deliver a big impact by being fair and transparent.
