SBBL Law is proud to welcome former United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge, as a Partner. Andrew brings more than 30 years of litigation experience in federal and state courts to SBBL's criminal defense team.

During a 25-year career with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Andrew served as a federal prosecutor, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, the Appellate Chief, and ultimately the U.S. Attorney--leading an office of approximately 80 attorneys and professional staff and overseeing its federal criminal and civil litigation. Andrew most recently worked with the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office, where he gained experience in Michigan courts at both the trial and appellate level.

Andrew continues the SBBL tradition of former federal prosecutors and former government attorneys now working on the other side of the aisle to ensure justice, fairness, and a constitutional process for those facing criminal charges. Andrew will be representing clients in criminal courts throughout the state of Michigan, as well as federal courts nationwide. He brings specialized knowledge to the firm's appellate, white collar, and complex federal investigations practice groups.

Welcome to the team, Andrew!

Congratulations to Mikayla Hamilton for being selected as Partner at SBBL Law!

Mikayla joined SBBL Law in 2021, where she has grown a substantial criminal defense practice and developed a nationally-recognized specialty representing law enforcement officers in criminal and civil claims against them for alleged misconduct. Following her zealous representation as co-counsel for Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr in a trial that captured national attention in 2025, Mikayla has been asked to speak at conferences around the country and write articles on police litigation. Prior to joining SBBL, Mikayla worked at two Chicago law firms doing complex civil litigation and worked as Assistant Corporate Counsel for the City of Chicago defending Chicago Police Officers in Section 1983 civil rights cases.

Mikayla puts her all into every single case. Her clients trust her innately for her skill and dedication to their cause. She is the consummate professional and is one of the most delightful people you will ever meet. We could not be luckier to have her in her new role as Partner. Congratulations, Mikayla!

When do police actually have to read Miranda Rights?

Many people believe officers are required to read Miranda warnings anytime they ask questions or make an arrest. In reality, the law is much more specific.

Miranda Rights generally apply during what courts call a “custodial interrogation” – when someone is both in custody, and being questioned for incriminating information.

In our latest blog, we explain:
• What “in custody” legally means
• Situations where Miranda warnings are NOT required
• Why statements made voluntarily can still be used in court
• What to know before speaking with law enforcement
