Today, we remember Kalief Browder on the 8th anniversary of his death. Kalief died by su***de after being traumatized by the violence and isolation he endured at New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, where he spent three years for a crime he didn't commit.

Like the majority of Rikers Island prisoners, Kalief was locked up for far too long awaiting trial. About 90% of the Rikers jail population are individuals being held pre-trial, waiting 115 days on average for their trial — four times the national average. The Innocence Project supports the effort to close Rikers by 2027 and to make the appropriate investments in housing, mental health services, and alternatives to incarceration programs.
