Throughout March we highlighted women judges and justices. We also highlighted that on August 4, Kansas is facing a major vote regarding an amendment to our consitution and how Supreme Court justices in our state our selected. Currently, our justices are selected by a Nominating Commission made up of an attorney and layperson from each of the state's congressional districts and one attorney chairperson. They will selected three candidates for the governor to name to the bench. That justice will then stand for a retention vote at the next general election. If they are retained they will then stand for retention election in six years. If you are interested in seeing how the process works you can! Today, the Nominating Commission is interviewing candidates to replace the newly retired Justice Marla Luckert, who we previously highlighted. Check it out using this link:

Seven attorneys/judges have submitted applications to fill the seat of retiring Justice Luckert to the Kansas Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Nominating Commission will be meeting by videoconference on April 21 at 11:00 a.m. to set the interview date and discuss other procedural issues. It will be livestreamed here: youtube.com//streams.

This is NOT some backroom, smoke-filled room. If you are interested in seeing how the full commission operates which includes attorneys and non-attorneys and how they work together to select the justices of the Supreme Court, we encourage you to watch the process from beginning to end, starting tomorrow!

April is Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month, and across Kansas, Pinwheels of Possibility are spinning! Every child is born full of promise. When families have the support they need early, before stress becomes crisis, children grow up safer, healthier and full of possibility. This month, join us to celebrate the power of prevention.

The pinwheel is more than a symbol of childhood. Each turn represents the programs, policies and everyday acts of care that strengthen families and help them thrive.

Prevention is possible. And it starts with all of us.
