The Center for Economic Studies linked tax and U.S. Census records for over 5 million children to examine how divorce affects family arrangements and children’s long-term outcomes. The 2025 report found that parental divorce reduces children’s adult earnings and college attendance, while increasing incarceration, mortality and teen births.

Changes in household income, neighborhood quality and parent proximity account for 25 to 60 percent of these divorce effects. Generally speaking, the answer is no, you don’t have to stay in Maryland after filing, but a consultation with a lawyer to discuss the specifics of your situation is advisable. For the most part, as long as you or your spouse were considered Maryland residents when you filed for divorce, your case can still be handled by the Maryland courts even if one of you moves to another state.
