Every family has one.

The person who gets called when something goes wrong. Who has the account numbers. Who knows which cousin isn't speaking to which cousin. Who will end up handling everything when the time comes — usually while grieving harder than anyone realizes.

If that's you, October 3 is for you.

Dr. Shatiea Blount, Kevin Carter, Jocelyn Route (Register of Wills-Elect for PG County), and I will be at the Laurel Branch Library talking about the conversations families avoid — the ones about death, money, and what people actually want. Ninety minutes and we'll touch on the conversation, from many angles: emotional, legal, and official.

Saturday, October 3 at 1pm. Free, but seats are limited.

🏷️ Tag someone who needs to see this. Better yet — bring them.

Hey Business Owner 🙋🏾‍♀️ If you spent last year scrambling to file (or worrying about filing) a BOI report ... you can breathe.

FinCEN, the federal agency that had been requiring small business owners to disclose beneficial ownership information, issued a final rule on August 11 that permanently ends that requirement for US companies and US persons. It took effect August 14. Any information US persons already submitted will be deleted from FinCEN's database.

Before you close this tab, three things worth knowing:

- Foreign entities operating in the U.S. still have to report for foreign beneficial owners. If your business has non-U.S. ownership or was formed abroad, this exemption doesn't cover you.

- This is a federal rule. A handful of states have explored their own beneficial ownership regimes. Know what applies where your business is registered.

This reporting burden is gone. The underlying governance work isn't. Current operating agreements, clean ownership records, buy-sell provisions, and a real plan for what happens to your business if something happens to you — those are what truly protect what you've built.

If you know a business owner who's been holding this stress, tag them or send them this post — the update is worth knowing.

Finishing your will is a milestone, and it's one to celebrate (especially because August is National Make A Will Month). Still, think of it as the first chapter of a longer story, not the whole book.

The rest of that story is your complete estate plan. It can name someone to make decisions if you cannot, spell out your healthcare wishes, set up trusts, and keep your beneficiary designations working in step with everything else.

Each piece covers something the others can't, so your plan holds together when your family needs it most. We would love to help you write the full story, not just the first page. Learn more at tahlawfirm.com.

He created a trust in 1996 — still in his twenties, decades ahead of most of us.

So why, one year after Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s passing, is his family in court?

According to the lawsuit filed last week, it comes down to the gap between what the paperwork said and what life did. New marriage. New promises. Documents that may never have caught up.

No villains in this story. Just a reminder: an estate plan isn’t a crockpot. You don’t set it and forget it.

I broke down the four lessons in this case on the blog — link in bio.

A midyear business checkup can prevent end-of-year surprises.

As your business grows, your legal documents should grow with it. Now is a good time to ask whether everything still reflects how your business actually operates today.

Consider reviewing:

– Client contracts and payment terms
– Vendor or partnership agreements
– Ownership or operating documents
– Business licenses and compliance items
– Insurance coverage
– Whether your current structure fits your growth

You don’t have to tackle everything at once. Start by identifying one document that may need attention before the year gets busier.

And if you need a hand reviewing your business records, visit tahlawfirm.com to schedule a consultation.

Your business plan and estate plan should work together.

If you own a business, your personal legal planning should account for everything you’ve built, not just your personal assets.

Estate planning can help address questions like:

– Who can step in to make decisions if you’re unavailable
– Who has access to important business information
– How ownership interests are handled
– How operations can continue without disruption

Without that clarity, even a well-run business can face unexpected challenges.

If you have questions about integrating your business into your estate plan, we’re here to guide you. Get started at tahlawfirm.com.

Your estate plan should keep up with your life. Many people believe estate planning is a one-time task, but major life and financial changes can quickly make older documents feel outdated.

We recommend reviewing your plan whenever you experience a shift in your family structure, health, or finances.

For example, if you started a business after signing your will, your current documents may not account for how those business interests should be handled.

Reviewing your documents when life changes, rather than waiting for an emergency, ensures your plan always reflects your current wishes.

Call 240-824-5299 or visit tahlawfirm.com if you need help determining if your plan is still a good fit for your life.

The story is both deeply personal and extraordinarily common.

From director Tia A. Smith on her new film The Heir: “For me, this film was never just about a house. It’s about memory, legacy, communication, and what happens when families avoid difficult conversations until it’s too late. This story is deeply personal to me because I lived it — on both sides of my family.”

The Heir explores the emotional fallout of generational legacy, grief, and one of the hardest questions families face after loss: what happens to the family home? Set against a backdrop of gentrification and rapidly shifting communities, the film examines how unresolved emotions, financial pressures, and unspoken history collide when loved ones are forced to make decisions about inheritance and property.

I started this because I lived a version of this story too. I saw — in real time — what happens when the difficult conversations get postponed. The grief is hard enough. The paperwork, the disagreements, the “what would they have wanted” — that part doesn’t have to be.

A house holds memory. A plan protects it.
