I once told a friend I couldn’t go to law school because I’d be 48 by the time I graduated.

“How old will you be in four years if you don’t go to law school?” he asked.

Dammit, Jim.

Before that conversation, I’d been a Navy corpsman, an EMT, a medical transcriptionist, a philosophy student, and a computer guy. I hadn’t exactly planned the itinerary.

Like father, like son, I guess: supposedly my dad stood in the wrong line in boot camp and ended up as an Aviation Electronics Technician when he wanted to be an airplane mechanic.

Now, at 68, I’ve written an introduction to myself. There are poems, philosophers, questionable Navy adventures, and a judge I nearly refused to let swear me in when I became a lawyer.

There’s also an attempt to understand how all those accidents led to something I chose deliberately.

Haven't you ever wished you could just shoot someone in the face and get away with it?

Well, I have news for you: Fresno PD, Fresno Sheriff, and Clovis PD, among others, are always hiring your type.

Though this story isn't about them, it easily could be. (Although if it were Clovis PD, we'd have to include them extorting club owners to install cameras for them to spy on your night out if they want to keep their liquor licenses.)

An off-duty Chicago police officer shot at someone who allegedly hit him in the face, injuring two people on the city's Southwest Side on Sunday morning, CPD said.
