Barb Wells is an experienced business lawyer, but her talents don’t stop at the office — she’s also a paws-itively dedicated puppy raiser!

For 20 years, Barb Wells has raised 21 puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, with number 22 arriving this fall. Ask her which puppy is her favorite – Barb’s answer is “The one I am with!”

The puppies are born in San Rafael, California, and then shipped to volunteer raisers in nine Western states. They usually arrive at two months old, and of course, Barb falls in love with them in seconds. For the next year, her job is to socialize the puppy so it can work in all kinds of settings without distraction. Then, the pups return to GDB for Puppy College to learn how to work in the harness. People ask “how can you let them go?” Barb says, “I cry, but I know they’re going off to have a great life and make someone’s world better.”

It takes a very special pup to become a guide dog, and not all pups do that type of work. Some become hearing assistance dogs, PTSD service dogs, or beloved pets — including one that still lives with Barb.

Guide Dogs for the Blind is a leading guide dog school preparing highly qualified dogs to serve individuals who are blind or have low vision. The dogs and training are provided free of charge and supported by donations and volunteers like Barb; GDB receives no government funding.
