I often hear people say, "I'll just add one of my children to my bank account so they can help if I need it."

It seems like a simple solution, but it can create problems you never intended. Adding a child as a joint owner may expose those funds to that child's legal or financial issues, and it can also lead to misunderstandings if your other children expected everything to be divided equally.

There are better ways to give someone the authority to help manage your finances while still protecting your wishes and keeping your estate plan on track.

The simplest solution isn't always the one that protects your family the best. That's why it's worth talking through your options before making changes to your accounts.

Coco's Corner 💛

Some friendships have a way of feeling effortless. It doesn't matter if it's been a week or a few months since you've talked. You pick up right where you left off, laugh about the same stories, and before long it feels like no time has passed.

The friends I'm most grateful for, check in. They keep their word. They have a way of making life feel a little steadier. My friends in this picture date back to my school days starting in the 3rd grade in Miami. Friendships like these are a gift that I hope I never take for granted.

One thing I’ve noticed about people who are responsible is that they often spend so much time protecting everyone else that they postpone protecting themselves.

They make sure bills are paid, kids are helped, parents are cared for, businesses are running, retirement accounts are growing.

But important legal and estate planning decisions quietly stay pushed to “later." Not because they don’t care.... Usually because they’re the person carrying everything else already.

The irony is that the people who hold families together are often the ones who need a clear plan in place the most.

I've finally accepted that putting something in a "safe place" means one of two things:
I'll either find it tomorrow -or- sometime next spring while I'm looking for something completely different. 😂

Coco's Corner 💛

Standing in front of the Crazy Horse Memorial is hard to describe until you've been there. What struck me wasn't just the size of it. It was knowing that the man who started it understood he would never see it finished.

Imagine believing in something so deeply that you're willing to begin a project knowing someone else will have to carry it forward. I found that thought staying with me long after we left.

So much of life is like that. We plant trees we'll never sit under. We teach lessons that won't be fully understood for years. We invest in people, hoping something we've said or done will make their path a little easier someday.

Maybe that's what legacy really is. Not being remembered for something extraordinary, but leaving the people you love a little stronger because you were here.

It is so hard as adult children to have the conversation asking their parents if they've done any estate planning.

Many people avoid bringing it up because they don't want to seem pushy or make their parents uncomfortable. But waiting until there's a health crisis or an emergency usually makes the conversation much harder.

I've found that the best approach is to come from a place of care, not control. Let your parents know you want to understand their wishes so the family isn't left guessing if something happens. Give them the opportunity to make their own decisions while they can, and let them know you'll support whatever choices they make.

Those conversations aren't always easy, but they're far easier than trying to figure everything out after it's too late.

One of my favorite places to visit in August is the CSU Flower Trial Garden. It's always stunningly beautiful, and it's one of those places that reminds me to slow down before summer quietly gives way to fall.

It's easy to overlook because it's always there, but every time I visit, I'm reminded what a special part of Fort Collins it is. If you haven't been this season, it's worth taking a stroll through.

I've always been convinced that cats believe the whole house belongs to them. Chanel certainly does.

It doesn't matter whether it's a blanket, my favorite chair, or the spot I was just about to sit down. She settles in like she owns the place and never questions whether she's earned a break.

Meanwhile, I'm usually thinking about one more email, one more load of laundry, or one more thing to cross off my list.

Maybe Chanel has been trying to teach me something all along. The work will still be there tomorrow, but every now and then, it's okay to claim the cozy spot first.

It’s almost impossible not to have a good time in Fort Collins. The hardest part is choosing which restaurant to visit today. So many great choices!

One of the misconceptions I hear from folks a lot is "My estate plan is all set. I have a will."

A will is ONE of the important documents, but people are surprised to learn what a will does and does not do. A will doesn't avoid the court probate system which is at a minimum an 8 to 9 month process in Colorado. A will doesn't give someone authority to handle things for you if you become incapacitated. A will doesn't allow you to control how or when your loved ones can get access to your accounts to pay those ongoing bills.

A will is just one part of an estate plan. If you are looking for ease of transition to your loved ones, you need a comprehensive plan that includes a revocable living trust. A trust can provide ease, protection and flexibility.
Estate planning is about having the right documents for so your family can take care of things.

Family is the WHY! Estate planning lets your love and legacy continue.
