Alissa Ge**er wanted to get federal flood insurance when she and her husband bought their home in Connersville in 2019, but they didn’t think any coverage was available to them.Now, her family is facing financial ruin and living in a friend’s camper after historic flooding last week left their home in east-central Indiana in shambles.Water from the Whitewater River buckled the floor and destroyed the electric panel and furnace.

After historic flooding, many residents don’t have insurance to cover the costs of repairs.

Our hearts go out to our neighbors across Indiana who have been impacted by the recent flooding. 💙 Seeing homes, belongings and communities affected by rising water is heartbreaking. Please put your safety first and know you’ll make it through these trying times.

A few important FAQs:

Q: Does homeowners insurance cover flooding?
A: Standard homeowners insurance policies (regardless of carrier) do not cover damage caused by flooding. Flood insurance is generally purchased separately through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer. Other storm-related damage may be covered depending on your policy and cause of loss, so contact your insurance agent or carrier to review your specific situation.

Q: What if I don’t have flood insurance?
A: For Indiana disaster assistance, call Indiana 211 at 211 or 866-211-9966. A representative can help determine what resources are currently available and walk you through the State Disaster Relief Fund application process when eligible.

Q: Is flood insurance just for homeowners?
A: No. Flood coverage may be available for homeowners, renters and business owners. Renters can purchase coverage specifically for their belongings, while property owners can explore coverage for the building and its contents.

Q: How can I protect my home from future floods?
A: Flood insurance is available to many homeowners and renters through the NFIP and private insurers. I’m NFIP licensed and can assist with writing flood insurance and answering questions about your coverage options. Keep in mind that NFIP coverage may have a waiting period, so it’s important to consider protection before the next storm.
