This is such an important point. Children are not always “good” with their safe parent. Emotional abuse can look like a lot of different behaviors in a parental separation.

Thousands of cases of "sextortion" are reported to the FBI annually, mostly boys. More than 20 suicides have been linked to these predatory cases. Talk to your kids! Rule 1) never send nudes, 2) never pay, 3) tell your parents immediately, 4) don't be ashamed. There are protections in place for victims even in cases of "deep fakes" with the tech companies, with law enforcement. Help is out there.

A Sacramento woman shot and killed outside an Arden-Arcade shopping center Tuesday had been stalked and harassed for months by the man suspected of killing her, sheriff's officials said.

The victim was identified Thursday as Shalini Thakur, 38, of Sacramento, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office. Court documents reveal that Thakur knew her stalker’s behavior was escalating and successfully got a restraining order that, ultimately, proved not to be enough to save her life.

California law allows a parent to authorize child marriage, typically for young girls, often to much older men. It is harder for a child to be emancipated than to marry in California. It is more difficult to rent a car, or lease an apartment, then to marry as a child.

Very shortly that will not be the case! AB1267 is awaiting the Governor's signature and getting us one step closer to keeping all children safe from the legalized child abuse that is child marriage.

Congratulations to all the people who worked so hard on making this day a reality!

Society: "Autistic people have poor emotional expression."

Science: Not true. Autistic people express emotions uniquely.

Researchers recorded nearly 5,000 facial expressions from autistic and non-autistic adults using detailed facial motion tracking and found:

Autistic people don't express less emotion.

They express it differently.

For example:
• Anger relied more on mouth movements than eyebrows.
• Happy smiles were often more subtle and less likely to "reach the eyes."
• Sadness was expressed using different facial movements.

Autistic participants also showed more variation in how they expressed emotions. There wasn't one "autistic facial expression."

Instead, autistic and non-autistic people may be using different emotional "languages." That means misunderstandings go both ways.

A non-autistic person may misread an autistic expression just as often as an autistic person misreads a non-autistic one.

This aligns with the growing evidence for the double empathy problem: communication difficulties often arise because two different neurotypes interpret each other through different expectations, not because one group lacks emotion or empathy.

Autistic people aren't missing emotional expression.

Society has just been expecting everyone to speak the same emotional language.
