✨𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘, 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦✨
You may wonder, what makes a good litigator? Talent, smarts, skill all matter, but so do grit, a sense of urgency, a backbone and confidence. I am a U2 fan. In his recent work, including Stories of Surrender, U2’s Bono has described the intense, often selfish focus necessary to create art and achieve artistic greatness. He has often reflected on how this drive to make something of their lives required a relentless, almost selfish dedication.
Litigating large, complex personal injury cases is no different. For a personal injury law firm, litigation can take years of meticulous work, investing tens of thousands of dollars hiring experts and paying case expenses, and fighting against opposing counsel. At times, the Court must get involved to resolve disputes. There is stress. Sometimes sleepless nights. Yet, the firm does not get paid as litigation unfolds. Indeed, the firm only gets paid if there is a recovery.
All the while, you try not to lose sight of the goal in representing (serving) your client and the client’s family of finding the truth of what really happened and why. Trying to effectuate change so that this situation does not happen again to someone else. There are wins and losses along the way. To stay the course, there must be an intense, relentless focus. Passion. Talent alone is not enough. You have heard it said, “anything truly worthwhile is rarely easy and most things that come easy do not last.” This is true in litigation.
I often tell my kids, if you are going to do something in life - do it well. Don’t be afraid. Work hard. Hard work is not your enemy. Do not try to find creative ways to avoid hard work. You want to work smart as well, but there is nothing wrong with hard work. In fact, hard work is a requirement to accomplish something truly great. This is true in litigation, and I believe it is true for most great things in life.
