Atticus, our youngest, has officially graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with his bachelor’s degree. I am proud of all our children; with their hard work, their mothers love, and an occasional check from their dad, they’ve all earned their degrees and grown into successful adults.

Many in our area know Tim Pennington — coach, mentor, and friend to generations of students. The generosity of his family is allowing the story of their loved one, SSG Ben Pennington, to be shared. A story of service and sacrifice, and of the home and values that helped shape his life — one that offers reflection and understanding which we all can learn from.

At 5 years old, he filled in a kindergarten prompt: 'I love America because I want to fight for my country.' He drew tanks and army men next to it.

At 18, he enlisted.

At 26, Staff Sgt. Ben Pennington from Glendale was killed in the Iran war- the seventh American to die in this conflict.

His family- Tim, Carrie, and Mackenzie- asked me to tell his story. They invited me into their home, shared photos, memorabilia, and spent two hours telling me who Ben really was- not just the headline, but the person.

I am honored ❤ You will see Ben's story Thursday- only on Shay Informed.

Mr. Durfee was a truly good man, evidenced by the love he shared with his family and friends and the deep love they now show for him in his passing. He will be remembered and missed by all.

Ronald William Durfee, age 66, of Hodgenville, Kentucky, joined his wife Sandy in eternal rest on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2025.

He was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island on September 26, 1959, to the late Kenneth & Helen (Kimball) Durfee.

Ron was a proud retired Cavalry Scout, Combat Engineer, & Motor Transport Operator for the United States Army. He was employed for many years as the Director of Improvements at NSU Corporation in Sonora, KY.

A man of integrity, kindness, generosity, & unconditional love, if he called you a friend you were family. He loved to travel, often camping with his family, and spending long, tranquil weekends with his wife at their lake house. His home was full of love, happiness, & laughter. He adored his grandchildren and was always present for them. His paradoxical and juxtaposed nature made him a problem solver who could persevere in all challenges with an unmatched work ethic. He was an intelligent, skilled mechanic who could fix anything. He lived a life of service and had great pride and love for his country and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth, and loving wife Sandy.

Ron is survived by his daughter, April & husband Josh Landon of Hodgenville; son, Brian & wife Sarah of MA; sisters, Barbara & Carol of RI; sister-in-law Sharon of RI; grandchildren, Maya Bennett & partner Keaton, Aria & Lana Landon & Michael & Jayden Westbrooks; and many loved nieces and nephews.

To Ron & Sandy a testament to love and life’s sweet flight. Two souls reunited for all eternity.

Memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, at Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville.

Ron and Sandy will be inurned with full military honors at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory are kindly directed to https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org
