It's nice to have a rich uncle or aunt, who leaves you in their Will - but it's never nice to pay the state of Kentucky a big chunk of that inheritance. Good news—Kentucky has fixed that!

At Thompson & Shreve PLLC, we keep up with the changes in the law so you don't have to. Thanks to an update in the law effective April 27, 2026, nieces and nephews are now in the same category as children, grandchildren, and siblings. This means they inherit completely inheritance tax-free for any estate where the decedent passed away on or after January 1, 2026.

Atticus, our youngest, has officially graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with his bachelor’s degree. I am proud of all our children; with their hard work, their mothers love, and an occasional check from their dad, they’ve all earned their degrees and grown into successful adults.

Many in our area know Tim Pennington — coach, mentor, and friend to generations of students. The generosity of his family is allowing the story of their loved one, SSG Ben Pennington, to be shared. A story of service and sacrifice, and of the home and values that helped shape his life — one that offers reflection and understanding which we all can learn from.

At 5 years old, he filled in a kindergarten prompt: 'I love America because I want to fight for my country.' He drew tanks and army men next to it.

At 18, he enlisted.

At 26, Staff Sgt. Ben Pennington from Glendale was killed in the Iran war- the seventh American to die in this conflict.

His family- Tim, Carrie, and Mackenzie- asked me to tell his story. They invited me into their home, shared photos, memorabilia, and spent two hours telling me who Ben really was- not just the headline, but the person.
