— A Beautiful Remembrance of the Late Roy Dent:
Many of our current clients knew Roy, Kaye's husband and former law partner (via Dent Law Offices). Sadly, he passed away two weeks ago. Here we share his remembrance.

Roy Jackson Dent, III, departed this world on August 25, 2026, at the age of 57, almost certainly mid-sentence, trying to get the last word. In fact, he planned to leave this remembrance in his own words, but his family, with the assist of his virtual buddy, Claude, were instead left with the somber task.
Those who knew Roy knew he was highly intelligent — dangerously so. He had a gift for language that bordered on unfair: he could describe an ordinary Tuesday and somehow leave you with a mental image so vivid you'd swear you'd been there. This same gift extended to his wardrobe, which was less "dressed" than "curated." On rare occasions you might catch him in something almost ordinary — Levi's, khaki shorts and a vintage rock T-shirt, or one his beloved Cal State Fullerton or Kent Law sweatshirts. And then there were the truly memorable moments: the head-to-toe Christmas suit, the bunny ears, worn with the same unbothered confidence as a three-piece suit for court. Whatever the occasion, Roy was always, somehow, exactly appropriately dressed for it — his own way, with a little mischief stitched in.
He was ornery in the specific and beloved way that only the truly clever can pull off — he'd deliver a line, and you'd know, with total certainty, that there was more coming. There always was.
Roy had a deep and eclectic love of music, ranging from Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath to the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Dixie Chicks, and plenty of others that made no obvious sense next to each other and somehow made perfect sense coming from him. His playlist, much like his wardrobe and his conversation, was unconventional, curious, and always open to something different — which tracks for a man who dressed like a concept album and talked in landscapes. In his downtime, he took up songwriting with the help of ChatGPT, which feels like exactly the kind of detail he would have wanted included, and exactly the kind of detail that makes it fitting — though not entirely accurate — that AI is writing this obituary too. [Claude, not ChatGPT, but Roy would have appreciated us not letting that get in the way of a good line.]
Roy had many accomplishments throughout his life, but two stood above all the rest. The first was being a father to Jack and Conrad, whom he lovingly called his "Little Funsters." His boys were his bestest little buddies and often his companions in life's adventures, travels, and mischief. Together they could be found rocking out to music, working side-by-side in the law office, traveling the world, or simply enjoying each other's company. Roy took enormous pride in his boys and in everything they accomplished — he believed in them, encouraged them, and loved telling others about the men they had become. Being their dad was one of the roles he treasured most.
And then, this past year, a little grandson named Declyn came along and somehow made Roy's heart grow even bigger. Whether Declyn was sitting on PawPaw's lap, listening to him read a book, or curled up snoozing in PawPaw's bed, Roy was simply in awe of him. One of Roy's favorite ways to end the day was a sweet goodnight phone call to Declyn — no matter what else had happened, hearing his grandson's voice was the perfect way to close it out.
Roy was a father, a grandfather, a mentor, an adventurer, and a friend — but to Jack, Conrad, and Declyn, he was simply Dad and PawPaw.
Roy was a talented attorney who genuinely loved practicing law— particularly, and unsurprisingly, the winning parts of it. Losing was not really in his repertoire, and if it ever happened, he likely found a way to describe it so vividly that it sounded like a strategic victory anyway. If you ended up on the losing end of one of his cases you would not agree, but his client always appreciated his dedication to his work. He was known for his expertise in bankruptcy law.
Roy also had a deep love of history, which likely explains why he could describe anything — a battle, a building, a bad decision at a dinner party — with the kind of vivid detail that made you feel like you'd read the primary source yourself. He was born and raised in Orange County, California, claiming Mission Viejo as his hometown. (Oh, the stories about his upbringing in the greater Los Angeles area!) He graduated with honors from Cal State Fullerton with both a Bachelor's and a Master's degrees in History. Then, apparently deciding he wasn't done, he finished his education in 1998 with a law degree from Chicago-Kent, where he was honored at graduation with a CALI in Bankruptcy Law. From there he remained in Illinois, except for a brief sabbatical to Las Vegas to be near his extended family.
Roy is survived by his wife, Lisa “Kaye” DeSelms Dent, his sons, Adam “Conrad” DeSelms Dent (his oldest, but not first born) (Wife, Makayelah), Thomas Jackson “Jack” Dent (his first born), and grandson, Declyn, beloved stepmother, Maria and extended family through her, including Grandma Lina and many cousins, who continue to care for his “ride or die” feline companion, Penn.
He was, by all accounts, a lot — colorful, sharp-tongued, impossible to out-argue, and utterly incapable of leaving a room quietly. The world is a little quieter now, and considerably less interesting.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roy’s memory to the Effingham Child Development Center, The Effingham Performance Center (two local nonprofits on whose boards he served with pride), Jim Beam’s Corner Cattery to honor his love of cats, or to the Dent Coulson Elder Law Walk to End Alzheimer’s team to honor his brave battle with dementia. Also, feel free to remember him by wearing something ridiculous and saying something you probably shouldn't.
