Just because you spent money doesn't mean it's a tax write-off! 🫣

I hear it all the time: “But I use it for work!”

Okayyy, but let's talk about it! 😂

If you're self-employed, own a small business, or have a side hustle, understanding your deductions is IMPORTANT.

📌 Here's what you should know:

💻 Business expenses: They generally need to be ordinary and necessary for your business.

🚗 Vehicle expenses: You can't just deduct all your gas AND claim the standard mileage deduction for the same vehicle expenses.

🍔 Meals: Buying lunch while you're working doesn't automatically make it a business expense.

📱 Phone bills: If you use your phone for personal and business purposes, generally only the business portion is deductible.

🧾 Receipts: Keep them! Being able to document your expenses matters.

And remember, a tax deduction doesn't mean you get that entire amount back in your refund! It generally reduces the income you're taxed on.

Tax season is approaching, and NOW is the time to get organized, not when you're sitting in front of your tax preparer trying to remember what you spent eight months ago. 😂

Ever wonder why so much is being taken out of your paycheck? Or why you ended up owing taxes when you thought you were getting a refund? 👀

Your W-4 might have something to do with it!

Your W-4 is the form you fill out with your employer that helps determine how much federal income tax gets taken out of each paycheck.

💵 Too much withheld? You may be getting less money in your checks than necessary.

💵 Too little withheld? You could end up owing the IRS when you file.

💵 Working two jobs? Your W-4 may need adjusting so you're not caught off guard during tax season.

And here's something a lot of people don't realize…

Claiming dependents on your W-4 is NOT the same as claiming them on your tax return! 🙌

Your W-4 helps calculate your paycheck withholding. Your actual eligibility for tax credits and dependents is determined when you file.

📌 October is a great time to review your W-4 before the year ends!

Don't wait until January to find out something could've been adjusted months ago.

Tax season is almost here, so let me remind y’all of something! 👀

The IRS does NOT care that your tax preparer told you that you qualified! 😭

Everybody wants the biggest refund until that IRS letter shows up asking for proof. 📬

But let me also say this…

As tax preparers, it’s OUR job to stay educated, keep up with tax law changes, and make sure we’re identifying every credit and deduction you’re legally entitled to!

You shouldn’t have to know every tax law. That’s what you hire US for!

Our job isn’t to promise you the biggest refund. It’s to make sure you’re getting EVERY dollar you actually qualify for, while making sure your return is prepared correctly.

And sometimes doing our job means telling you NO!

A bigger refund doesn’t always mean a better tax preparer. 💯
