Following the fatal shooting of 34-year-old John Jenuwine, The Intercept is raising new questions about whether police reform efforts are delivering meaningful accountability.

In January, Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies pursued Jenuwine even though he did not match the description of the men they were seeking. Deputies then executed two dangerous PIT maneuvers, classified by the department as deadly force, causing Jenuwine's van to roll over. Moments later, deputies fired more than 20 rounds, striking him seven times.

After shooting Jenuwine and confirming he was still moving inside the overturned vehicle, deputies failed to call for medical assistance.

“The cruelty of it, I suppose, is what strikes me the most,” said Flood Law Senior Attorney Maura Battersby Murphy. “If aid had been rendered, he may have survived this.”

Sheriff’s deputies in Michigan fired 27 shots at John Jenuwine, even though “he was not the guy that they were supposed to be chasing.”

An unarmed Navy veteran. 27 shots. A family left waiting nearly 18 hours to find out their son was dead.

Flood Law has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family of John Andrew Jenuwine, who was shot and killed by Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies on January 6, 2026.

John grew up in St. Clair County, served six years in the U.S. Navy and was, in his father's words, “the son every man wants.”

His parents have faced a pattern of dishonesty from Washtenaw County since the night their son was killed. Those responsible need to be held accountable, and that accountability starts now.
