KOAR Fast Tax Tip: Actual Vehicle Expenses vs. Standard Mileage
ππ° SELF-EMPLOYED? ARE YOU DEDUCTING YOUR VEHICLE EXPENSES THE RIGHT WAY?
Did you know there are two common methods for deducting business vehicle expenses? Choosing the right one could make a difference in your tax deductions!
OPTION 1: STANDARD MILEAGE METHOD
You deduct a set amount for every qualifying business mile driven. This rate already accounts for expenses such as gas, oil, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and vehicle depreciation.
OPTION 2: ACTUAL EXPENSE METHOD
Instead of using the mileage rate, you calculate the business-use percentage of your actual vehicle expenses, including:
- Gas and oil
- Repairs and maintenance
- Auto insurance
- Tires and registration fees
- Depreciation or eligible lease expenses
IMPORTANT: You generally cannot claim gas, repairs, and the standard mileage deduction for the same vehicle during the same period.
Which one should you choose?
Mileage may be better if you drive a lot of business miles and have relatively low vehicle expenses.
Actual expenses may be better if you have substantial gas, repair, insurance, and other vehicle costs. However, only the business-use percentage generally qualifies.
Example: Which gives the bigger deduction?
Suppose you drove 10,000 qualifying business miles from July through December 2026 and used your vehicle 80% for business.
Method Potential deduction
Standard mileage: 10,000 Γ $0.76 $7,600
Actual expenses: $8,000 Γ 80% $6,400
In this example, the mileage method provides a $1,200 larger deduction.
KOAR FAST TAX TIP: Don't automatically choose the method that sounds better. Compare the numbers, and check the IRS eligibility rules first. Your first-year choice, vehicle depreciation history, and whether you own or lease the vehicle can affect which method you're allowed to use.
