Think Compliance: 3 Tasks to Complete This Week
Healthcare professionals, compliance is not a once-a-year activity. It is a routine part of protecting patients, supporting accurate billing, and preparing your organization for regulatory review.
Your 3 Compliance Tasks This Week
1. Check the OIG Exclusion List
Review the HHS Office of Inspector General’s List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) for employees, providers, contractors, vendors, and other individuals or entities connected to your organization. Document the date searched, the person responsible, and the results. Follow your policy for investigating and addressing any potential match.
2. Review a Sample of Claims and Medical Records
Select a small sample of recent claims and compare the documentation, coding, medical necessity, signatures, and services provided. Confirm that the medical record supports what was billed and identify any trends that require education or corrective action.
3. Verify HIPAA Safeguards and Workforce Access
Review a sample of user access to electronic protected health information. Confirm that employees have only the access necessary for their roles, terminated employees have been removed promptly, and staff are following privacy and security procedures. Document any issues and assign corrective actions.
Make These Monthly Compliance Tasks
* Complete exclusion screening and retain documentation.
* Conduct billing, coding, and documentation audits.
* Review workforce access and termination reports.
* Track compliance concerns, investigations, and corrective actions.
* Confirm required licenses, certifications, and training are current.
* Review HIPAA incidents, complaints, and security alerts.
* Report findings to the appropriate compliance leader or committee.
A strong compliance program does not wait for an auditor to identify problems. It routinely checks, documents, corrects, and improves.
