In 1941 the United States Army needed a piece of Louisiana big enough to practice a world war on, and Vernon Parish is where they found it.
The pine country of west central Louisiana had already been cut over hard. The great longleaf forests were gone, the sawmill towns were emptying out, and what was left was cheap land and families farming it. To the War Department that read as available. Camp Polk was established that year, named for Leonidas Polk, and around it the Army assembled an enormous training area.
Getting it meant clearing people off. Farms that had been in families since Reconstruction were bought out, condemned or simply surrounded. The community of Peason, over toward Sabine Parish, is the one people still bring up, a settlement that had a school and a church and a post office and then did not. Homes came down. Cemeteries were left standing inside the reservation, so descendants have needed permission and an es**rt to visit their own people ever since.
What happened next was the Louisiana Maneuvers. Something close to half a million troops moved across these parishes in mock war, and the officers who came out of it with reputations were Eisenhower, Patton and Bradley. Farmers watched tank columns cross their fields. Bridges went down under weight nobody had planned for. Then those men went to North Africa and Normandy, and the argument has always been that this ground is where the American army learned how.
The post has never closed. It trained soldiers for Vietnam, for Iraq, for Afghanistan. In 2023 it was redesignated Fort Johnson, for Sergeant William Henry Johnson, a Black soldier of the First World War. ⚜️
So Vernon Parish gave up its farms and got a permanent army in exchange, and the families whose houses came down in 1941 are now three and four generations removed from the land, most of them still living within an hour of it.
Some Louisiana communities were taken by water. This one was taken by paperwork, and the paperwork won a war.
