You've worked hard to build a life with the people you love. Have you taken the steps to protect it?

From naming healthcare decision-makers to protecting your children's future and making sure your partner is provided for, estate planning is about so much more than what happens after you're gone.

It's about making your wishes known and giving your loved ones clarity when they need it most.

Every family has a story. Your estate plan should reflect yours.

Married? Great. Estate plan complete? Not necessarily.

Marriage provides important legal protections, but it doesn't automatically answer every question about your healthcare, finances, property, or wishes for the future.

And if you're unmarried, those questions can become even more complicated.

Whether you've been together for two years or twenty, putting the right legal documents in place can make all the difference.

Family isn't always defined by biology or a marriage certificate.

Sometimes family is the partner who has stood beside you for decades, the friend who shows up when life gets difficult, or the people you've chosen to share your life with.

But Texas law doesn't automatically recognize every chosen family relationship.

A thoughtful estate plan can help ensure the people who matter most to you aren't left out of important decisions.

Because your family deserves to be protected, however you define it.

If something happened to you tomorrow, who would make decisions on your behalf?

Would your partner be able to speak with your doctors? Manage your finances? Carry out your wishes?

The answers might surprise you, especially if you're not legally married.

Estate planning gives you the opportunity to put the right people in charge, rather than leaving those decisions to chance.

We protect our accounts from strangers. But have we planned for the people we love?

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a good time to be thoughtful about what we share online and who we trust. It's also a good time to make sure the right people can step in when we can't.

Your digital life is part of your legacy.

Five small steps to make your digital life easier on your family:

✅ List your online accounts, and note which ones send codes to your phone
✅ Use a password manager
✅ Keep your phone passcode somewhere safe, and tell a trusted person where it is
✅ Print your backup codes and store them with your important papers
✅ Set up legacy tools like Apple Legacy Contact or Google Inactive Account Manager

Pick one to do this week. The full list is on our blog.

Two-factor authentication is one of the best protections we have online. It's also one of the most overlooked parts of estate planning.

Even with a complete list of passwords, families are often locked out because the verification codes go to a phone they can't unlock or a number that's been canceled.

In Texas, the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act lets you give instructions about your online accounts through your will, trust, power of attorney, or a company's own online tools. Pairing those legal documents with practical steps, like saving backup codes and naming a legacy contact, gives your family a much clearer path.

Our new post walks through both sides. https://mistelilaw.com/2026/10/05/protect-your-family-online-and-off

Your family has your passwords. Can they get into your phone? 📞

Most accounts now text a code to your phone after you enter the password. After you die, Face ID and fingerprints stop working, so your loved ones will need your passcode, and your phone line will need to stay active.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, tell someone you trust where your passcode is kept.
