Where engineering insight meets legal strategy.

Being named to D Magazine’s Best Lawyers 2026 reflects a continued commitment to helping clients protect and maximize the value of their innovations.

For John Gregory Fischer, that work draws on a unique combination of legal, technical, and business experience. As a patent prosecution attorney and licensed professional engineer with more than 20 U.S. patents of his own, he works closely with clients to develop, protect, and enforce intellectual property both in the U.S. and internationally.

His background in litigation also informs how patents are drafted and positioned—keeping enforcement, commercialization, and long-term value in focus from the start.

Congratulations to John on this year’s recognition.

In litigation, proof matters.

Being listed in D Magazine's Best Lawyers 2026 is a huge accomplishment, but for T. Chase Garrett, success is all about one thing:

“It doesn’t matter what I believe. It only matters what I can prove.”

That principle shapes his work in real estate and business litigation, where outcomes depend on preparation, strategy, and the ability to present clear, compelling evidence.

Congratulations to Chase on this year’s recognition.

Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. is pleased to welcome Ashley Souza as part of the firm’s 2026 Summer Law Clerk class.

Ashley is a J.D. candidate at SMU Dedman School of Law, where she is involved in the Corporate Law Association, Women in Law, and the Dallas Bar Association. She also earned “Best Advocate” honors in SMU’s Jackson Walker 1L Oral Argument Competition, recognizing her strong advocacy and oral argument skills early in law school.

Before joining Scheef & Stone, L.L.P., Ashley gained in-house legal experience with AZT Corporation – Tabani Group, a commercial real estate development company, where she worked on matters involving real estate transactions, due diligence, lease review, acquisitions and dispositions, title and survey review, and transactional documentation. Her experience has included supporting attorneys with legal research, drafting notices and estoppel certificates, preparing closing materials, and assisting with compliance-related matters tied to commercial real estate transactions.

Ashley earned her Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication, magna cm laude, from Baylor University, where she also served in leadership roles through the Portuguese Student Association and Baylor’s Pre-Law Society.

She shared that her interest in law first began through her family’s experiences with immigration attorneys, as her father’s side of the family is from Brazil. Watching the impact attorneys had on families navigating important life matters sparked her early interest in the profession and inspired her to continue exploring different areas of law.

Outside of law school, Ashley enjoys staying active through soccer, volleyball, and pickleball, which she says are some of her favorite ways to unwind and connect with others outside of academics.

Ashley has also remained involved in community-focused initiatives, including volunteer work with Allies Against Slavery, supporting survivor-focused advocacy efforts, as well as volunteer service with the North Texas Food Bank.

During her time at Scheef & Stone, L.L.P., Ashley hopes to gain exposure to a wide range of practice areas while also learning more about courtroom proceedings and how legal strategy operates in practice.

We’re glad to have Ashley with us this summer and look forward to the contributions she will make to the firm and its clients.

Leadership, Service, and a Growing Passion for Litigation.

Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. is pleased to welcome Gillian West as part of the firm’s 2026 Summer Law Clerk program.

Gillian is a rising 3L at SMU Dedman School of Law, where she has taken on several leadership roles within the law school community. She currently serves as President of the Student Bar Association after previously serving as Secretary, 1L Representative, Wellness Committee member, and mentor to first-year law students. She has also served as Secretary of the Hispanic Law Student Association, Spring Brunch Chair for Women in Law, and was recently inducted into the Barristers’ service organization.

Prior to law school, Gillian earned her degree in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with honors while also serving in leadership roles through Texas Sweethearts and LEAP mentoring initiatives.

Gillian has already gained hands-on experience through clerkships and legal positions involving litigation support, legal research, discovery, drafting motions, and client-related matters. Her background includes work with law firms in both Texas and New Mexico, as well as research and advocacy work supporting victims of crimes against women.

She shared that her interest in law grew over time through exposure to the legal field and opportunities to work in law firms throughout college and law school. As the first future lawyer in her family, those experiences helped solidify her decision to pursue the profession.

Outside of law school, Gillian enjoys working out, walking the Katy Trail, attending concerts, and following college football — especially Texas Longhorns Football.

During her time at Scheef & Stone, L.L.P., Gillian hopes to continue strengthening her legal research skills, contribute across a variety of matters, and further narrow her interests within litigation while building strong relationships throughout the firm.

We’re glad to have Gillian with us this summer and look forward to the contributions she will make to the firm and its clients.
