Programs & Services
LEGAL REPRESENTATION
The Children's Law Center provides attorney to represent young people in a variety of legal and administrative proceedings including child abuse and neglect matters, special education and other school issues, homelessness, juvenile justice issues, and "multi-system" cases. The Center’s lawyers are engaged in litigation at the trial court and appellate levels and in both federal and state courts as well as administrative forums. Chase College of Law, the University of Kentucky Law School, and the University of Cincinnati Law School on fellowships and externships. Additionally, social work and criminal justice students from Northern Kentucky University, University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University, along with students from various universities across the nation, have volunteered or completed internships through the Center. Staff and students have produced numerous publications around issues involving the rights of children which are distributed free to judges, attorneys and other professionals working with youth. RESEARCH AND PUBLIC POLICY DEVELOPMENT
The Children’s Law Center uses research and innovative community-based initiatives to develop sound public policies for children in the legal and social service systems. The Center has been involved in research projects concerning the use of secure detention for juveniles, school crime and violence, and the right to counsel for child victims. Research projects are used as part of a broader effort to promote accountability among government agencies providing services to children. INFORMATION AND REFERRAL

The Children’s Law Center receives hundreds of calls each year from children seeking clarification of their legal rights, parents requesting referral sources for their children, attorneys requiring technical assistance, and social service providers with questions concerning the rights of their clients. Center staff provides telephone assistance and makes referrals to other attorneys and agencies as appropriate. SPECIAL PROJECTS
Changing economic and political climates require innovative solutions to problems facing children. The Center continually develops and reviews its programs to ensure that they meet the most prevalent needs of its clients. In addition, the Center has worked with other agencies, both in Kentucky and around the country, to develop and replicate successful projects that have improved the quality of advocacy services for children.

At last week's Kentucky Opioid Symposium in Owensboro, CLC Executive Director Sasha Naiman and Deputy Director Nick Caprino discussed how education rights can help schools respond to the needs of young people affected by substance use.

That can look like flexibility for treatment appointments, regular check-ins with a trusted adult, or a plan to return to school after treatment. For children whose parents are in recovery, it can mean addressing how changes at home affect attendance, schoolwork, and their ability to focus.

Our Social Service Clinician Nicole Murone also connected with attendees, sharing information about our free legal services and how children and families can turn to us for help.

A child who is missing school or struggling in class may have needs that haven’t been recognized. These conversations help families and providers know what questions to ask and what school supports may be available.

It is a special time in CLC’s history as we celebrate Executive Director Sasha Naiman’s fifth anniversary! 🎉

Sasha has played an essential role in preserving the heart of our work while leading with courage and advocating fiercely for kids across Ohio and Kentucky. She understands what is at stake when a child’s voice goes unheard or their rights are overlooked, and she brings that sense of responsibility to her leadership.

Her commitment to showing up for young people, for our team, and for the work ahead is something we deeply admire. Even when the work is difficult, she approaches it with remarkable strength, poise, and determination.

Sasha, on behalf of our entire team, thank you for the heart you bring to this work and the care you take in leading it. We are proud to work alongside you and so grateful to celebrate five years with you! 💛

For Week 1 of Youth Justice Action Month (YJAM), we’re highlighting Education and Empowerment.

A young person’s involvement in the justice system should not determine what they get to become.

Young people in detention, alternative education settings, or returning to school still have goals for their futures. They deserve the chance to keep learning, earn credits, receive the support they need, and move toward what comes next.
But too often, legal barriers get in the way.

CLC helps young people protect their right to an education: securing disability services, resolving enrollment and credit transfer issues, and challenging decisions that push students out of school. We also help clear juvenile and criminal records that can follow young people long after a case ends, creating barriers to college, training, and other opportunities.

And empowerment is about more than solving the immediate problem. It’s making sure young people and their families understand their rights, know what questions to ask, and recognize when they can challenge a decision that affects their future.

Because learning doesn’t only happen in a classroom. It happens when a young person realizes they have rights. When they learn how to advocate for what they need. When they speak up—and know their voice matters.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and shape what comes next.

Help us wish a very happy anniversary to CLC Staff Attorney Sara Bitter! 🎉

For the past two years, Sara has helped young people and families work through challenges at school, advocating for students’ rights and the education and services they need. She represents young people in courts and administrative hearings, drawing on years of experience advocating for people with disabilities and their families.

These issues can affect so much of a child’s school experience, from getting the help they need in class to being able to participate alongside their peers. Sara’s work helps students have those opportunities.

Sara, we’re so glad you’re part of CLC. Thank you for the care you put into your work with kids and families, and for sharing your experience with our team. Happy two years! 💙

One of the most exciting moments at Saturday’s brunch was made possible by DeSantis Family Law. 💛

Ahead of the event, they generously committed $7,500 to serve as our matching gift. That meant donations made during this year's Boots, Bourbon, & Biscuits could be matched up to $7,500, giving our guests an extra reason to step up for children and youth across Kentucky and Ohio.

Thank you, DeSantis Family Law, for your continued belief in CLC’s mission and encouraging others to give alongside you! 🌟
