A case can potentially be worth eight figures. That doesn't mean eight figures will actually be recovered.

Chris takes a look at the potential civil side of the tragic Malibu crash that killed four Pepperdine students.

Prosecutors allege the driver was traveling at extremely high speed before losing control on PCH. The criminal case is still pending, and the defense disputes the prosecution's case.

From a personal injury perspective, Chris sees another important question:

If the damages are enormous, where does the money actually come from?

Insurance coverage, assets, additional responsible parties and other potential sources of recovery can become just as important as establishing the value of the loss itself.

Because there's a big difference between obtaining a large judgment...

and actually being able to collect it.

The insurance company offered you $50,000. Should you take it?

Maybe.

That's the problem with judging a settlement by the number alone.

$50,000 could be a good settlement. It could also be nowhere near enough.

What are your medical expenses? Are you finished treating? Will you need future care? Did you lose income? Are there reimbursement obligations or liens? What insurance coverage is available? And how has the injury actually affected your life?

Until you understand the details, the number doesn't tell you enough.

That's why Chris isn't interested in guessing what someone's case is worth.

Sit down. Look at the facts. Know the numbers.

Then make the decision.

Not every case ends with a huge paycheck. That doesn't mean someone doesn't deserve help.

If someone is legitimately injured and we can help, the size of the case isn't the only thing that matters.

“What is my case worth?”

It's one of the first questions people understandably want answered after a serious injury.

But on the first phone call?

There may simply not be enough information to give you an honest answer.

How much treatment will you need? What will the medical expenses look like? How much work will you miss? Will the injury fully heal—or affect you years from now? What insurance coverage is available? What does the evidence show?

Those things take time to understand.
A big promise might get someone to sign. That doesn't make it an honest evaluation of their case.

Then one day, a cease-and-desist letter showed up at the office...

A 13-year-old boy went out on his bicycle after school.

He never made it home.

Police say the middle school student was riding near Pickett Road in Fairfax City when he was struck by a large truck that was leaving a shopping center.

He died at the scene.

And incredibly, he wasn't the only student involved in a crash that day.

Fairfax County Public Schools says three students were involved in separate incidents with vehicles that Wednesday while riding bicycles or scooters.

Within two days, that number had reportedly risen to four.

⚖️ Right now, investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened in this fatal crash, so we're not going to speculate about who was legally responsible.

But Chris has a message for every driver:

School is back. Expect kids to be everywhere.

On bicycles.

On scooters.

In crosswalks.

Coming out of neighborhoods.

Around shopping centers.

And sometimes doing things that kids do — moving quickly, making mistakes, or going somewhere you weren't expecting them to go.

As drivers, we have to be looking for them.

Slow down. Put the phone away. Look twice before pulling out of a driveway or parking lot. And pay especially close attention during the hours when kids are traveling to and from school.

Because there's another side to tragedies like this that we don't talk about enough.

A family has lost their 13-year-old child.

And somewhere there's also a driver who will have to live with being involved in the death of a child for the rest of their life.

Nobody wins.

Please slow down and look out for these kids.

A few extra seconds of attention can prevent something that can never be undone. 🚲💔

Five people went to work at Miami International Airport.

They never made it home.

On September 6, an Amazon-branded Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air overran the runway while landing and struck vehicles on the ground.

Five people were killed and five others were injured.

And the lawsuits have already begun.

Multiple victims and families have filed claims naming parties including 21 Air, Amazon, the pilots and companies connected to the aircraft. The lawsuits allege negligence and other failures contributed to the crash. Those allegations have not yet been proven.

She was excited about a $25,000 settlement offer.

Then she learned there was another number she hadn't considered.

Her health insurance had paid roughly $32,000 toward her medical treatment—and there could be reimbursement obligations that had to be addressed as part of resolving her claim.

Suddenly, that $25,000 didn't look nearly as good.

This is why evaluating a settlement isn't always as simple as looking at the number on the offer.

Before you accept, make sure you understand the medical bills, potential reimbursement claims, remaining treatment, and what the settlement could actually mean for you.

What looks like a good deal on paper can look very different once you know the whole picture.
