Did you know the West Wing is actually at the Harris County Courthouse?! Who knew!? 😉
🏛️ A little history on the Harris County Courthouse:
Harris County was created in 1827 and built its first courthouse in 1831. The one standing in Hamilton today came nearly 80 years later: the contract was let in October 1907 for $35,000, the white Tennessee marble cornerstone was laid January 25, 1908, and the first court convened there on June 1, 1908.
The architect was Edward Columbus Hosford, who went on to design courthouses across Georgia, Florida, and Texas — Harris County’s was only his second. Its Classical Revival design, with six Doric columns and a wide pediment, has anchored the center of Hamilton ever since, and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
It’s been updated rather than replaced. A 1986–87 renovation brought new wiring, roofing, HVAC, and accessibility upgrades. In 1998–99 the county added a 25,000-square-foot wing on the east side housing the newer courtroom and offices, built to serve a growing county without altering the historic facade. The original 1908 courtroom was renovated in 2002. And anyone who’s been in lately has seen the latest round — a multi-phase restoration that has brought a new roof, restored exterior and balconies, and a refreshed interior.
