On the evening of December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia to the Ohio side of the river near Gallipolis was carrying its usual rush hour traffic when it collapsed into the Ohio River without warning. 🌉 In under a minute, dozens of cars and trucks went into the freezing water, and the bridge that thousands of people crossed every week was simply gone.

Investigators later traced the disaster to a single small defect, a tiny crack in one steel eyebar caused by corrosion and years of stress, something almost impossible to spot from the outside. The bridge had opened in 1928 and was considered a normal, reliable crossing right up until the moment it wasn't. Around 46 people lost their lives that night, making it one of the deadliest bridge collapses in American history.

The tragedy changed how bridges are inspected across the entire country. The National Bridge Inspection Standards were created directly because of what happened at Silver Bridge, requiring regular, thorough inspections of every bridge in the United States going forward, a legacy that still protects drivers today without most people ever knowing why.

A final will and testament in the state of Ohio


In Ohio, your final will does not legally require notarization to be valid. Instead, Ohio law requires the document to be in writing and physically signed in the presence of at least two competent, disinterested witnesses (people who do not inherit anything from the will). [1, 2]
While a notary is not required to validate the document, a notary cannot take the place of one of the two witnesses. If you choose to have your will notarized anyway, Ohio does not recognize self-proving affidavits, meaning the probate court may still require the original witnesses to testify or verify the will's ex*****on.
