The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council (ODDC) is a planning and advocacy body committed to community inclusion for people with disabilities. ODDC is funded under the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, Public Law 106-402. ODDC is a partner within the Ohio DD Network which includes Ohio's Protection & Advocacy System (Disability Rights Ohio) and Ohio's two University

Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities: The Nisonger Center of The Ohio State University and the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center of the University of Cincinnati. The Ohio DD Council uses its page to provide information about the Council. The Ohio DD Council also to share news from other organizations. The Ohio State University Nisonger Center, in partnership with Assistive Technology of Ohio and Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities present TechSummit 2026 – an in-person event conveniently held in central Ohio. At this event, attendees can hear from people with lived experience, engage with experts, and explore technology solutions for themselves.

Epilepsy 101 for Coaches

As an athlete, Andy participates in a lot of team sports. When new coaches learn that he has epilepsy, they often feel unsure about what to do if he has a seizure.

Andy created a short video for coaches that explains what different seizures may look like and how to respond calmly and safely. The video focuses on sports, but the information can help anyone.

His goal is to help coaches feel prepared and confident. “Epilepsy doesn’t stop me from doing the things that I love," Andy said. "This is important to me and my community because it brings awareness and helps. All kids and coaches feel safe and supported.”

With a little preparation and support, you can learn to become a stronger advocate for yourself and a supportive voice for people with developmental disabilities.

Here are a few tips for success:

Prepare: Know your goal before starting a conversation.
Build a support system: This can include friends, family members, peers, and professionals.
Use resources: Contact organizations or agencies that can help you prepare for conversations or provide guidance.
Be patient: Like building a muscle, the more you advocate, the more comfortable, effective, and strong you become.

The Ohio Nursing Collab (ONC) now offers a new Home Care Nursing Training Playlist for families and Service and Support Administrators (SSAs).

Meet Andy Barrett from Licking County, our newest Community Ambassador!

Andy did his project on epilepsy, a health condition that causes sudden seizures.

Andy helped his community in a few ways:

- He taught people facts about epilepsy.
- He showed people how to support someone having a seizure.
- He focused on how to be safe and helpful during sports.

Andy is only 13 years old and is our youngest ambassador ever! His work shows that anyone can be a leader. There is no age limit on advocacy and leadership!
