On May 18, Tae Andrews, Calfee Senior Counsel, presented a webinar with The Knowledge Group, LLC, “Beyond the Exclusions: When New Allegations Unlock Insurance Coverage.”

In the webinar, Tae and fellow speaker Michelle Burton reviewed how an insurer’s duty to defend can be initiated by evolving allegations during litigation, affecting insurance coverage even when exclusions appear to bar it initially. Tae Andrews, Calfee Senior Counsel, recently authored the article, “Illinois Genetic Information Privacy Act Litigation,” which was published this month in Thomson Reuters Practical Law The Journal.

The article examines the scope, application, and litigation trends under the Illinois Genetic Information Privacy Act (GIPA). Enacted in 1998, GIPA regulates how genetic information is acquired, used, and disclosed. The piece also explores the increasing liability and insurance coverage issues tied to these claims.

His background includes six years as Director of the Ohio EPA and four years as Chief of the Ohio Attorney General’s Environmental Enforcement Section, giving him a unique understanding of state and federal environmental regulatory agencies.

Calfee Practice Co-Leader and Partner Matt Chiricosta and Senior Counsel Justin Howell were quoted in the recent Law360 Insurance Authority article “Policyholders, Insurers Lauded 9th Circ. Enviro Cleanup Ruling.”

In the article, written by reporter Abraham Gross, Matt and Justin discussed a Ninth Circuit ruling in County of San Bernardino v. Insurance Company of the State of Pennsylvania. The ruling, which "revived a California county's request for coverage of environmental cleanup costs," was praised by counsel for both policyholders and insurers for its thoroughness.
