March is Irish-American Heritage Month, and it always hits me in a very personal way. My Irishness is not subtle. Between the name (Brenden Patrick Kelley) and the fair skin, freckles, and the brown-and-red beard, I wear it on my sleeve. It gives me away before I even say a word. But what matters more is what it has shaped in me: a sense of belonging, a love of story, and a belief that faith is something you live, not something you perform.
And here in Cleveland, Irish heritage is not abstract. You feel it in the neighborhoods, the parades, and the way people show up for each other.
I had the chance to visit Ireland in October 2025, and it deepened that for me. There’s a steadiness there I can’t quite explain, equal parts grit and warmth. It reminded me that resilience is not just pushing through. It’s staying connected to what’s true, staying close to your people, and coming back to your values when life gets loud.
That’s why a line from Notre Dame’s Alma Mater, “tender, strong, and true,” has stuck with me. Not just as a beautiful phrase, but as a way to measure how I’m living: tenderness in how I treat people, strength in what I’m willing to carry, and truth in how I show up when it would be easier to hide.
That is also how I try to practice law. Justice is personal. People come to a lawyer when something is on the line, sometimes their livelihood, sometimes their family, sometimes their trust in the system. This month is a good reminder for me to stay grounded in the kind of leadership I want to be known for, in my work, my faith, and my life.
As we head toward St. Patrick’s Day, I’m grateful for my heritage, and even more grateful for the people who keep me anchored to what matters.
