Steve is the author of many articles on "Bike Law" and co-author of "Bicycling & The Law." Steve is also a contributing author to "Bicycle Accident Reconstruction & Litigation." His unique Bike Law practice was featured in Lawyer's Weekly USA, and locally in C

incinnati magazine and Cincy Business as well as the Cincinnati Post. Steve has developed a legal education program for lawyers & judges called "BIKE LAW 101" which he has given throughout the state. Steve's Bike Law practice takes him all over Ohio. In the past few years alone he has had cases in Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, Mansfield, Columbus, Dayton, Bellefontaine, Marietta, Ironton, Stow, Bowling Green, Pickerington, Lima, Findlay, and many more. He has appeared in many of Ohio's 88 Common Pleas Courts to protect the rights of cyclists injured or killed in crashes. In addition to his trial practice, Steve is a long time bike advocate, starting back in the 1980s in Cincinnati. He now works with local advocates throughout Ohio and has sat on the Board of the Ohio Bicycle Federation for many years. Steve also sits on the Legal Committee of the League of American Bicyclists, which drafts Model Laws and consults on special legal projects. For the past 10 years Steve has been working on his Fatal Crash Project in which he studies, in detail, every fatal bike crash in Ohio. After working on this as a "side project" in his solo law office, Steve is now starting a NEW non-profit entity which will take over the project. The new entity should be up and running by Jan 1, 2021 and will seek funding to study the fatal crashes in a more formal fashion. It will gather all data- crash reports, witness statements, photos, videos, crash reconstruction data, forensic reports, alcohol data and more. The group will study this data, catalog it and report its findings. The data & reports will help cyclists, legislators, media understand what is happening on Ohio's roads, and why. Steve can usually be found on one of two bikes... his Bike Friday World Tourist, with e-assist, or his custom painted Independent Fabrication Club Racer...

"In 2002, I posted on the ACA message board [Companions Wanted] looking for someone to ride the TransAmerica Trail with. Many emails later, I had a group. One of the guys joining was Scott, who had just been released from jail in Vietnam for illegal camping. That sounded a little shady. Little did I know we'd be married a few years later. Two other members from that group ended up married as well. Love must have been in the air that summer.

We never could shake the bike touring bug, always scheming and planning the next adventure. At some point we realized our jobs and city lives were getting in the way of our true passion. So we gave it all up. Easter 2013, we sold our house and everything we owned and left Houston for Tierra del Fuego. Not so much a tour as a new life. With everything we own on our bicycles, we're traveling via 'The Poor Man's R.V.' We don't know if, when, or where we'll settle down again."

— Sarah & Scott 📍 Houston, TX → Tierra del Fuego | Surly Long Haul Trucker | July 17, 2013

Sarah and Scott's story and photo are part of Adventure Cycling's 40-plus-year storytelling project called The National Bicycle Touring Portrait Collection. This year, Adventure Cycling is digitizing the entire collection.

Companions Wanted is a member benefit for finding riding partners on long-distance bike tours. It’s not a dating service or a space for personal ads. Just cyclists looking for other cyclists to share the road. What happens after that is between you and the open road.

The Wright brothers owned a bicycle shop before they became airplane inventors. Only five bicycles made by the Wright brothers are known to exist.

This one, a model they called St. Clair (lent by The Henry Ford) that was made in 1898, is on display in our "Wright Brothers" exhibition. Happy !
