Aspirin. Escalator. Thermos. Trampoline. Yo-yo. Cellophane. Videotape.
All of them were once owned. All of them were lost the same way: the public started using the brand name as the name of the product itself, and the owner either couldn't or didn't stop it.
It's called genericide, and it's the only failure mode in trademark law where being too successful is the cause.
It's also why Velcro made a music video begging people to say "hook and loop," and why Xerox spent decades running ads asking you not to xerox anything. That's not vanity. That's maintenance.
Use your mark as an adjective, not a verb. Kleenex tissues, not a kleenex.
