In May 2024, a 75-year-old man was walking from Walgreens after picking up medicine for his wife when he was struck and killed by a City of Joliet utility truck while crossing the street. He is survived by his wife and three adult children.

For two years, Larry R. Rogers Jr. and Dominique Rogers worked alongside his family to understand how this happened and hold those responsible accountable. Their work ultimately resulted in a record settlement for the family.

While nothing can undo their loss, we are proud to have stood with this family during an incredibly difficult time and helped them find answers and accountability.

A small fire. A routine call. A building that should never have been standing.

On December 22, 2010, a Chicago firefighter forced entry into a vacant building on East 75th Street to search for anyone inside. The east wall gave way and the roof came down. He was 34.

The lawsuit alleged the mortgage company had taken possession of the property two years earlier, had been warned by an inspector that the roof beams were rotted, and was already facing city code violations for the roof and walls. It alleged nothing was done.

Partner Carolyn S. Daley represented his widow and their one year old son. The case settled for $10 million.

Law schools are rewriting their rules for the AI era, and Chicago is part of the conversation.

University of Chicago Law is piloting a no-device policy in its core first-year classes this fall. No laptops, tablets or phones. Exams run in the classroom without internet or file access. Every student will also defend their research paper in person, answering questions from their professor.

Moneywise quoted the dean summing it up: "Students will be there with a notebook and a pen and taking notes." - TechSpot

It is not a ban on AI. As TechSpot reported, the school's memo states "It is simply unrealistic to think that students and lawyers will not use AI."

Faculty pointed to uses they see as productive, like having AI quiz you on your own class notes. The clinics are adding AI tools for real client work.

The reasoning is sequence. Build the fundamentals first, then layer the technology on top.

Not everyone agrees. Moneywise reported only 18 percent of students supported an outright ban, and other schools are landing elsewhere. TechSpot noted Berkeley Law went further, restricting AI across nearly all graded work.

It runs as a one-year pilot.
