LEGAL TERM OF THE DAY: OBJECTION
You have probably heard it in every courtroom drama: “Objection!”
But what does it actually mean?
An objection is a formal statement made by an attorney during a legal proceeding when they believe a question, piece of evidence, or statement violates the rules of evidence or procedure.
Think of it as an attorney saying, “That should not be allowed here.”
Common objections include:
Hearsay
Relevance
Leading the witness
Speculation
The judge then decides whether to sustain the objection or overrule it.
