Calling all Cooks and Holders of Fond Memories
I’m trying to capture old school recipes to share with a few generations that really need them. This is for a project honoring the great women in my life that shared their cooking with me throughout my life.
The premise of all of this started with the idea of my mom and her contemporaries cooking quickly for an “event” that had popped up… it might be when someone is sick, it might be for a family with a loss in their life, or it might be a quick notice celebration. All my mom’s friends (and the Cheyenne Civic League or other sisterhoods) had some “go-to”, tried and trued, recipes that they could throw together and show up with a “dish” that fed a volume of people. It could be something simple like having a ham spiral cut by the store butcher, saucing it up with a quick combo of barbeque sauces, putting it in a “good pan” and bringing it hot (yes this idea came from my mom), or it could be something a little more involved like egg salad in volume (which my Aunt Carol taught me to speed up with some great tricks). These are the kind of recipes and tricks I’m looking for, so they won’t be lost; Gen X, the millennials, and beyond need them!!
Then, as an extension to this project, through another conversation, I started thinking about the foods that made us feel special at some point. Think along these lines: ask yourself, or someone else, “what did your mom or grandmother (or anyone else) make for you that made you feel special?” Everyone will likely have “something”. Again, it can be something simple or complex… but evokes a memory. I’d like these recipes as well, and bonus points for those that tell me why or tells me a story.
Feel free to share this request to anyone who you think might enjoy participating. I’d appreciate if you could send these to [email protected]
