Going through a divorce is stressful — and it’s easy to make moves that feel harmless but can seriously damage your case. Here are three to avoid:

1. Posting on social media 📱
What you post can and will be used against you. Venting, sharing photos, or even checking in somewhere can become evidence. While your case is active, less is more online.

2. Moving money or assets 💸
Transferring funds, emptying accounts, or hiding assets isn’t just frowned upon — it can result in serious consequences before the court. Everything is on the table in equitable distribution, and judges notice.

3. Signing anything without legal advice ✍️
Separation agreements, property settlements, and consent orders are legally binding. Signing something you don’t fully understand — or that wasn’t drafted with your interests in mind — can lock you into terms you’ll regret.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Whether you need full representation or just want someone to review what’s in front of you before you sign, we’re here.

Today, two attorneys were shot outside the Wake County Courthouse. This is devastating news for our legal community and our city.

As family law attorneys, we work in these court rooms on a daily basis. We know - and see - the weight that brings everyone through those doors; whether you are a Plaintiff, Defendant, attorney, judge, or any other reason that brings you to that building. My heart is heavy and with the victims and their families tonight and with everyone who went through those doors this morning.

To our colleagues in the Wake County legal community — take care of yourselves and each other. 🙏

In North Carolina, they're two separate legal remedies — and the difference matters.

🔹Post-Separation Support is short-term/temporary (paid by one spouse to another) and kicks in during the divorce process, as soon as the separation begins.

🔹Alimony is what may be awarded after the divorce is finalized, or on a more permanent/long-term basis, and upon a more detailed review of the marriage.

Understanding what you may be entitled to — or responsible for — starts with knowing the basics.

What can a separation agreement actually cover?
More than most people think:

🏠 Who keeps the house (or how it gets divided)
💰 Spousal support / alimony
👶 Custody and visitation arrangements
📋 Division of debts and retirement accounts
🐾 Even pets and personal property

A well-drafted agreement = fewer surprises, less conflict, and no courtroom drama. This out of court contract could resolve all your issues while waiting on that one year and a day to file for divorce. (Caveat: Depending on your specific situation, you may want a friendly “Consent Order” entered for some issues to supplement the agreement. Talk with an attorney on what may be best for you).

Not sure where to start? That's exactly what we're here for. 💙
