Georgia’s Court of Appeals and Supreme Court review the decisions of Georgia’s “lower” courts to determine if those judges made the right decisions for the correct legal reasons. This week, these courts hosted about 20 attorneys from across the state for a workshop on appellate practice. Our own Catie Blackwell was in attendance. Catie received feedback on an appellate brief, on oral arguments presented in front of real judges, and a unique insight into how these courts operate and how the judges think.

Today, our NEWEST ASSOCIATE, Mr. Drew Dotson, was sworn in to practice law in Georgia. Drew has interned for the firm for several years and we are proud to call him our colleague. Drew is a Pickens County native, an avid golfer, and a graduate of the University of Georgia and of the SIU Simmons School of Law. He joins our criminal defense division.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏽What is “legal custody” in Georgia? ⚖️
Legal custody is about who has the authority to make major decisions for a child—including decisions about education, health care, extracurricular activities, and religious upbringing.
Legal custody is different from physical custody, which concerns where the child lives and each parent’s parenting time.
Georgia judges also commonly allow parents to share joint legal custody while assigning one parent final decision-making authority in certain areas.
Understanding the difference matters when creating or modifying a custody order. 💙
