If you’ve been told your credit score wasn’t quite high enough to buy a home, it may be time to have another conversation with a lender.

Changes in mortgage lending are expanding the use of VantageScore credit models, which can take a broader look at how consumers manage their finances, including certain rental payment information.

That could be especially important for first-time homebuyers, younger buyers, freelancers, gig workers, and people with limited traditional credit history.

In other words, you may have been paying your rent and bills faithfully for years but still struggled to build the type of credit history traditionally used for a mortgage.

The lending world is changing.

Does this mean everyone suddenly qualifies for a mortgage? No. But it DOES mean that if you were turned down before or told to work on your credit, it might be worth checking again.

Don't assume you can't buy a home based on what you were told a year or even six months ago.
