It takes a survivor of intimate partner violence an average of seven times to leave an abusive relationship. Some find it hard to leave because:
- they fear retaliation from their ex-partner
- they worry about a lack of money to support themselves on their own, or
- they are trying to maintain a family unit even when facing violence at home.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you need help with a safety plan and accessing resources to leave an abusive relationship, reach out to your local domestic violence agency. Did you know that a person convicted of a crime in Vermont may ask to vacate the conviction if it was obtained as a result of them being a victim of human trafficking? The survivor files a motion explaining their experience of being trafficked and how that experience resulted in the conviction. There might be a hearing or a trial. If the motion is granted, the court vacates the conviction and expunges the record of the criminal proceeding.

Fall means that Farmworker Outreach is underway at Legal Services Vermont!

Each growing season we complete outreach to farmworkers who are here under the H-2A visa program. We take the time to deliver information regarding our services and speak to workers in the field about legal issues they may have.

Free estate planning clinic in Barre. Sign up ASAP!

The Vermont Judiciary’s Delivery of Legal Services Commission and Vermont Law and Graduate School’s South Royalton Legal Clinic are hosting a free Estate Planning Pop-Up Clinic on Saturday, September 19, from 9:30–11:30 a.m. in Barre.

Learn about wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, and other estate planning tools, and get an opportunity to speak with a volunteer attorney about your individual needs. Space is limited and registration is required.

LSV has been doing tabling events at Burlington's Fletcher Free Library recently. The library calls them "Community Partners Desk" events. It's a way to let the community know more about LSV's free resources, online tools and services.

Our next event is September 23 from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. While we cannot give legal advice in this very public space, we can steer you toward help to address challenges related to housing, debt, public benefits, abuse, or other legal issues you may be struggling with.
