ONE Legal Services fills the gap of legal services that fall between Vermont Legal Aid and the Public Defender. Jennifer Lord has been practicing law in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom since January 2000. She has served as a public defender, deputy state's attorney, and a trial lawyer in family, civil, and probate court cases. She now focuses her practice on real estate, business, and estate planning.
Lord knows that legal fees for these services average $200 per hour or more, and retainer fees for such services are in the thousands of dollars. She knows that these fees are out of reach of many. Lord became acquainted with Burlington's Old North End while rehearsing for and performing in the Spielpalast Cabaret. She discovered a vibrant artistic community that was very gracious and welcoming to her. As a lawyer, she saw that the residents of the Old North End would benefit from high quality yet affordable legal services. And thanks to "cloud computing" she can "bring her office with her." So she decided to spend every other Tuesday afternoon away from her private practice in the Northeast Kingdom and serve the residents of the Old North End who have been so gracious to her. Her dream is to establish a permanent law office providing affordable high quality legal services to residents of the Old North End and beyond. Lord meets clients at the conference room at 294 N. The room is spacious, clean, and private. Clients will be charged fees on a "sliding scale" ranging from $25 to $75 per hour based on ability to pay (as determined by the client's conscience). Sometimes a client's legal issued can be addressed in one visit. Usually, one or two more visits are advisable. So clients may expect from one to three office appointments (up to three hours total) to address their particular legal issue. Services include family law, business formation, wills, and real estate. Consultations and document preparation only. No court appearances. Follow-up phone consultations/e-mails are available after the first in person office consultation.
